ABOUT THE PAINTING... One of the fascinating results about painting in a freer open style is how emotions of the artist at the time can be transferred to canvas or paper. I was in an angry mood when working on this painting and I believe that anger definitely transferred onto the canvas in Underlying Tension. I used a coarse pumice stone mixed with the applied gesso ground to give the painting a rougher textured appearance like sandpaper.
